SURF Etiquette
Where there are waves there is surf. I was first introduced to the beautiful sport of surfing in its birthplace, Hawaii. Crowds of people would flock to the shores to catch the warm waves in hopes of gliding over the reefs. There truly is no better feeling. However, sometimes in really populated and mainly touristy areas boards are colliding and a potentially perfect waves is stolen from right in front of you. With surfing comes surf etiquette. For new surfers, not excluding myself, the thrill of a waves means you will just paddle for any wave with hopes of catching. That might mean pulling your board right infront of someone else or ignoring the line up. That’s where surf etiquette come into play. Surfing is an individual sport in a packed playing field. When surfing you should never place your board too close to someone else or even worst Infront of them. You should be aware of the line up if there is one. At most beginner beaches the goal is to stand up and ride toward shore. For more experienced surfers they will be turning to ride parallel to the beach. Be aware of this and all of your surrounding when surfing. With all the passion for the sport surfers can become very territorial and aggressive toward those that don’t follow these simple rules.
Your instructors will teach you how to catch a wave and stand up but hopefully this post can help you to be a more mindful surfer.
Priority is a big part of surfing. The surfer that gets to the wave first wins, if someone stands up next to you don’t try to get up, its already taken. If you haven’t had a wave in a while and someone is catching every single one, you can go for it because they aren’t taking you seriously lol
Etiquette tips:
1.If there is someone behind you move out of their way
- stay at least 2 boards lengths away from other surfers.
- check on waves out the back and on shore. See if there are surfers behind or in front of you.
- first to feet, that means if someone is up, the wave is their
- listen to left or right calls. For more advances surfers they will call out what direction they are going
I hope this help you all feel more comfortable on the waves. Based on my experience so far everyone is so nice in the water and patience. With the great help of the Tiziri staff you will be a great surfer and with the knowledge of surf etiquette you will be even better. 🙂
