What to expect from the first surfing course?

The opening of borders is getting closer and closer, as is the planning of the next holiday. If you are thinking of attending a surfing course or even booking a week-long holiday with us at Tiziri Surf Maroc, this is what we usually do a on the beach and in the water for the first time.

STEP ONE: WHICH SURFBOARD SHOULD I SELECT FOR MY FIRST SURF LESSON?

There is a lot of misunderstanding regarding the usage of a surfboard. Most people think that the shorter the surfboard, the cooler you are. Are you sure about that? Don’t be! Trust me, the bigger the board, the easier it is to balance and stand on it. So, my advice is to choose a surfboard around 8-9 feet long. But anyway don’t worry about the size of the surfboard. Our certified surf instructors will choose for you the perfect size of surfboard regarding your body structure and your previous surf experiences.

STEP TWO: WHAT TO WEAR DURING MY FIRST SURF LESSON?

You don’t have to worry about what to wear during the surf course. Tiziri Surf Maroc will provide you with a wetsuit to wear for the duration of the surf course. If you are only going to take a one-day surfing course, make sure you let us know your clothing size. However, if you join us in our surf house on a multi-day holiday, we will choose the right size of your wetsuit the day before or in the morning before going to the beach.

Of course, make sure you bring a swimsuit with you, which you will be wearing under the wetsuit and while relaxing on the beach.

STEP THREE: GOOFY OR REGULAR?

Here is a sort of tricky game to let you understand which leg is the stronger and which one will define your style. Maybe you were already snowboarding or skating before and you already know which leg is stronger. If you don’t know don’t worry, we will help you figure it out. You will close your eyes and our surf instructor will slightly push you from the back. If the first leg you are putting on the ground is the right one, then you are goofy and need to insert the leash on the left ankle.

STEP FOUR: HOW TO POP-UP ON THE SURFBOARD?

This is the most difficult part of all the sport. Lie down on the surfboard, put your hands under your chest, push your self up in the high plank and stand up, back foot, and then front foot. We will practice first on the beach. You have to repeat it a couple of times on the sand and then, with the help of our surf instructor, you will do it in the white water.

Remember: bend the knees and always watch front!

This will help you with balance and allow you to not fall down and ride for a couple of seconds on the power of the wave.

Back foot, front foot, stand up, bend the knees and watch front! You are ready!

STEP FIVE: PADDLE!

In order to get the speed just before the pop-up, you need to paddle deep and dig. Whenever you feel the push just under your surfboard, that is the moment to pop-up. Most of us want to stand up too early, so remember: when you think you need to stand up, paddle 3-4 more times and then stand up!

Either way, there is nothing to worry about. All the time you will hear our surf instructor shouting behind you: “paddle, paddle, paddle, stand up!”

MOST IMPORTANT STEP SIX: HAVE FUN!

The first lesson is all about having fun, enjoying and laughing, with a huge desire to keep going and getting better and better at surfing!

Remember: The best surfer out there is the one having the most fun!!”
